Bruno Mars brought a high-energy performance to the 2014 Super Bowl. He was dressed in a gold jacket and impressed audiences with his singing and dancing for 12 minutes. Mars was joined by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
2. J.LO SPLITS FROM CASPER SMART
Splitting up in June, the couple has been seen at events together since, causing speculation that they’re trying to work it out. Who knows!
3. THE OSCAR SELFIE
Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres was determined to have the most retweeted selfie of all time. She was joined by a bunch of famous faces, such as Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper and Lupita Nyong’o. So fun!
4. ‘STAR WARS’ CAST IS ANNOUNCED, FIRST TRAILER RELEASED
After a lot of speculation on who would star in the J.J. Abrams-helmed reboot, it was announced that many newcomers would become the main cast. John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver were a few of the first names revealed. Latinos Oscar Isaac and Lupita Nyong’o will also be part of the movie. The trailer was released later in the year, and it’s among one of the most watched of all time.
5. JAY Z AND SOLANGE KNOWLES’ ELEVATOR FIGHT
One of Beyonce’s most private moments was revealed to the entire world. At the Met Gala, Solange is seen hitting and kicking rapper Jay Z through security footage. Following the incident, there were rumors of infidelity and a lot of damage control for Carter-Knowles.
6. ENRIQUE IGLESIAS GETS PEOPLE BAILANDO
Enrique Iglesias may have come up with the catchiest song of 2014. Bailando became the longest-running No. 1 song on the Hot Latin Songs chart, according to Billboard. The song was also Iglesias’ 25th No. 1 song.
7. COLOMBIA’S WORLD CUP RUN
The 2014 World Cup was dominated by Latinos. Not only did it take place in Brazil, but Colombia, while not winning overall, had an amazing run. The championship made a star out of James Rodriguez, and Rihanna made an online celebrity out of a Colombian cutie that she spotted while watching the games. Another Colombian, Shakira, performed at the closing ceremony. Colombia also became the favorite of many neutrals with its attacking style and synchronized goal celebration.
8. MALALA YOUSAFZAI WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
Female education activist Malala Yousafzai, 17, became the youngest person awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She shared the award with Kailash Satyarthi, who worked to fight the financial exploitation of children. Justin Bieber, who chatted with her through FaceTime, was very impressed by Yousafzai.
9. KIM KARDASHIAN AND KANYE WEST MARRY
For months, there was a lot of speculation about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding day. Eventually, the two tied the knot in Florence in May. Andrea Bocelli and Lana Del Rey sang for the couple. The wedding party’s actions were well documented during their time in Europe.
10. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY IS A BOX OFFICE HIT
Guardians of the Galaxy had an amazing run at the box office, making it the current highest grossing movie of 2014, with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 being the only movie with a chance to knock it off. The superhero movie also happened to star Latina Zoe Saldana as Gamora.
11. GRUMPY CAT’S WORST CHRISTMAS EVER AND OTHER LIFETIME MOVIES
Lifetime had a series of provocative and highly amusing movies. Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas, which starred Aubrey Plaza as Grumpy Cat, is the network’s latest. Though the movie didn’t receive high ratings, it was was much talked about on Twitter. The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B and Sharknado 2: The Second One are a few others that were well documented on social media.
12. LUPITA NYONG’O TALKS ABOUT BEAUTY
Lupita Nyong’o had an amazing 2014, and one of her best moments was her speech on beauty at the 7th Annual Women in Hollywood Luncheon. “I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin. I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned,” she said. Nyong’o continued to talk about how things got worse until model Alex Wek helped her push through her insecurities.
13. ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
This year, celebrities and everyday people participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The viral movement had people pour buckets of ice water on themselves to raise awareness for ALS. Those who didn’t take on the challenge were supposed to donate money to the cause. The ALS Association reports that $115 million were raised in donations after July 29, 2014.
14. PHARRELL’S HAT
It started at the 2014 Grammys. Pharrell decided to wear a vintage Vivienne Westwood hat. Though he had worn the hat before, it really took off in 2014. He continued to wear it at various events, and he event auctioned it off.
15. CHESPIRITO AND OSCAR DE LA RENTA PASS AWAY
Two of the biggest Latino icons died in 2014. Other notable celebrities we lost in 2014 include Paco de Lucia, Shirley Temple, Cheo Feliciano, Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney.
16. BOOTIES AND JENNIFER LOPEZ
This year, Jennifer Lopez released her hit Booty, and then she teamed up with Iggy Azalea for a remix. The steamy video became a hit and boasts more than 80 million viewers. Vogue also decided that “we’re officially in the era of the big booty,” which made many upset.
17. THE HOTTEST COUPLE EVER DEBUTS
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello began dating and the world went nuts because it may be the hottest couple that has ever existed. If they have kids we’re pretty sure those children will start a whole new species — that’s how evolution works, right?
18. NAYA RIVERA’S SURPRISE WEDDING
Naya Rivera surprised everyone by marrying Ryan Dorsey. She and Big Sean had split up in April, and Rivera was married on July 19 in Mexico. It was later reported that July 19 was her original wedding date.
19. EMMA WATSON’S HE FOR SHE SPEECH
Emma Watson delivered a powerful speech about feminism. She explained that feminism wasn’t about hating men, and she said that it was also a male issue. She said, “Men—I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too.”
20. DIANE GUERRERO TALKS ABOUT HER PARENT’S DEPORTATION
Diane Guerrero shared a painful piece of her past. She explained that all through her childhood, she feared that one day she would come home to an empty house. When she was 14, it happened. Guerrero’s op-ed for the Los Angeles Times also said that after her parent’s were deported no government officials ever checked in on her.
21. RYAN GOSLING AND EVA MENDES’ BABY NEWS
A million hearts broke when it was first announced that Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes were expecting a child. The web responded by talking about how beautiful the baby was going to be.
22. SAME-SEX WEDDINGS AT THE GRAMMYS
Madonna and Macklemore performed Same Love at the Grammys, where 33 couples got married on air. After couples were married, Madonna sang one of her old songs, Open Your Heart.
23. RIHANNA’S NAKED DRESS
Rihanna is known for her daring fashion choices, and at the CFDA Awards, where she was awarded for her fashion, she showed up in a naked dress.
24. MARIAH CAREY AND NICK CANNON SPLIT UP
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, parents to Moroccan and Monroe, split up earlier this year. There were rumors flying around until Cannon himself confirmed the news.
25. ARIANA GRANDE’S EPIC SUMMER
Ariana Grande had the best summer. It was impossible to not hear her songs or see her half ponytail this year.
